silk
Using a blend of ancient and modern natural dye techniques, the silk is hand dyed in plant matter that ranges from freshly grown flowers to madder root that takes three years to produce color, and even avocado pits.
linen
The linen cloth, woven with flax fiber, is the canvas for the piece that follows.
I built my first loom in 2014 by hammering nails into the top and bottom of a wooden frame. I wasn’t sure how weavings would fit into my work, but a wise neighbor told me it didn’t matter. To follow my hands’ yearning, because our ancestors speak to us through our hands.
In more recent years, I found out that many of my ancestors in Italy were weavers; weaving out of necessity to provide warmth for the family. This included my Zia, Nonna, Bisnonna, and at least one woman from each generation as far back as my family lived in the region of Abruzzo.
